What Losing an Animal—Especially a Dog—Might Mean Spiritually

“Humanity's true moral test, its fundamental test…consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals.” — Milan Kundera

Yoda

I lost my soulmate this week: my sweet Yoda, who had been with me for 15 years, crossed the rainbow bridge surrounded by all his family and doggie friends. We loved on him as he transitioned, thanks to the gentle care of a hospice vet who came to our house. Yoda was a ‘papouille slut’—he loved to just lie next to me and get full-body scratches. As he declined, he didn’t enjoy being with me as much or follow me around, but he still loved his daily papouilles.

From an Eastern European puppy mill, he entered our lives at 5 months old, joining our other wirehaired dachshund who was 3 years old at the time. Our dachshunds grew up with our children. They moved with us to the US and came with us on all our adventures. They were as much our family as our children. A packaged deal.

Years ago, I read in a Diana Cooper book on Atlantis that dogs arrive with children and pass when they leave the house. Our first dachshund, Giggles, died a few months after our eldest left for college. And Yoda transitioned a few months after our second left. My youngest daughter has another 2 years until she goes to college: it will be interesting to see if this timeline proves true for our next dog, Obe Won Kanobe (yes—we had a serious Star Wars phase).

The house feels very empty since Yoda’s transition. Obe has been moping. He is the only one left of the initial trio. He’s a mutt who came to me in a dream while my husband was in Peru on an Ayahuasca retreat. He asked that I adopt him for my husband—to be his companion and business buddy. That’s always been his role. He goes to work every day with my husband, comes back exhausted, having “worked” a full day: snoozing in dog baskets, riding in cars, and receiving many treats from office visitors. Life is exhausting for Obe. Honestly.

Enter Zuma

A few months ago, Obe told me he wanted a girlfriend. He described her quite precisely: black, with a big white spot on her chest, about his size, and meant to be his and only his. I looked for her, but nothing surfaced. I let it go—until a friend sent me an ad from a foster group seeking short-term fosters. I liked the idea of being a safe house for dogs until they could be flown to areas with fewer animals, so I began fostering puppies.

One day at a private airport, I was handed a petrified black dog to foster for two weeks. She’d arrived with her two siblings from a high-kill shelter on the East Coast, scheduled for euthanasia that day because no one wanted a black dog after 60 days.

My youngest also wanted her own dog—a very expressive one, unlike stoic Obe. Zuma is a black lab/pittie mix with a big white patch on her chest. She was terrified—impossible to approach. After weeks with us, we committed to adopting her. She’s mostly warmed up to the girls and younger males in the house, but my husband still can’t approach her. Right now, I’m glad she decided to stay—Obe is grieving, and I can’t help but think Giggles sent Zuma his way. Zuma licks Obe the way Obe used to lick Giggles—with such dedication. He’s finally getting a bit of his own medicine. Giggles always had a great sense of humor.

Loving With the Heart of a Child

A lot has been written about the human-animal bond. One theory I cherish is that we love an animal with the heart of a child. The bond is akin to an umbilical cord. Love with an animal is uncomplicated, pure, and true. I’ve had more of a relationship with my dogs than with many humans over the past 15 years. I speak with them in ways beyond words. I love seeing them happy, enjoying walks, play, and loving connection.

A Spiritual Perspective on Dogs

I believe dogs understand us without words. They know us better than we know ourselves. They see our souls—only love and light. They are the keepers of our soul mission and the guardians of our heart. They are our guiding stars for this incarnation.

Some pets are soulmates, guiding us, helping us carry our earthly load, and reminding us of why we’re here. They are the love link to where we come from. If love is the path, then pets are facilitators of the path. They remind us that life is a cosmic joke—that we need to play—and that happiness comes wrapped in fur.

Dogs are the greatest teachers of living a soul-led life. Their capacity to forgive and move on is unparalleled. My dogs have been the most solid presence in my life. They remind me to return to my body, to joy, and to the sacred in the simple things.

According to my guides, different soul companions join us at different stages of our mission. Scotch, my English Cocker Spaniel, was with me until I was 22. Snoopy, my cat in London, passed when I met my husband. Then came the dachshunds as my children arrived in Brussels. Obe came as we moved to Asheville and my husband stepped into entrepreneurship. And now, Zuma arrives as I launch my oracle deck.

Each dog is guardian of a part of your mission, broadcasting that energy and holding you accountable. It’s their role. It’s their devotion. They walk your path with you—until it’s time to pass the baton.

A Channeled Perspective on Dogs from Sirius

As a Sirian Starseed, I’ve long felt the cosmic connection between our animal companions and our soul missions. The following was received from my guides:

“The Star System Sirius is associated with dogs for a reason: On Sirius, our connections with our animals are unique. We see them as equals and they volunteer themselves to come and serve the Sirian Starseeds on Earth.  Most dogs have followed their humans on Earth as part of their mission.

Dogs are channelers of our energies, amplifiers and road correctors. They hold our mission as a gentle loving mirror. You will not find a household without multiple dogs and other animals because our co-existence brings harmony to all ways of life.

They act as guarantors of a certain stage of your mission which they constantly broadcast to you. They keep you connected to your soul and protect your energy systems. Dogs can transmit energy to your energy systems if they are activated.

Their role is the same on Sirius. They aren’t Gods per say but they participate in all our communities events and rituals. We find their energies stabilizing and grounding. They hold a profound wisdom that is venerated. You can even find temples and shrines dedicated to our animals, especially dogs as it is believed that they are the keepers of the wisdom of our communities and share a special bond with the elderlings. We always take into account our dogs in any decisions- they are very sensitive to energies and will mirror back to us any disharmony before we notice it ourselves.

A dog chooses a soul to accompany for part of his/her mission. We believe there are different stages in a mission that can last anywhere between 7-14 years - how long the dog stays with you is at its discretion. But through the bond you create, many magical things happen:  love, healing, alignment, remembering, encouragement, guidance. The dog is always transmitting to you if you pay attention.

When it is time for the next stage of your mission, the next dog will arrive to guide you.

Some dogs volunteer for a mission, but ultimately it’s more of an energetic matching process. A dog will just choose you because you match energetically and there is an energetic recognition that happens during the pairing. That’s why we say that a dog chooses you, it will automatically pair with you. They keep you connected to your soul through play and the simple things, that’s why we say they are guarantors to your mission.

They can take on your stuff, to transmute it but if you don’t take the steps to clear your energies, then they will take it on too much due to their huge compassion and need to be of service. If your dog starts manifesting dis-ease, it is time to pay attention to lightening your load and to clearing your energy fields. They are a sacred mirror to your soul mission. Pay attention to where they start hoarding the energies in their body and start clearing them on yourself. “

Keep your dog around you when you are working- its presence will help you steadily move on your path.

Try this simple energetic practice: Sit quietly with your dog, place your palm gently over their heart, and ask inwardly, What part of my path are you guarding right now? Let your body listen. Let the answer arise.

Animal Reading

When Giggles passed, I consulted an animal communicator. I felt distraught and guilty about putting her down. She was 15.5, and her quality of life was declining. The vet wasn’t supportive or helpful in our decision. We made the call without a plan.

The communicator described Giggles to a T. She said Giggles was finally getting a good rest—she’d taken care of everyone for years and was ready for a break. She reassigned roles to Yoda and Obe. Yoda was to protect me and the house. Obe was to protect my husband and the workplace. It helped so much to have someone affirm my choice.

Animals don’t always express pain. They don’t always tell us when they’re ready. Having a guide to help us interpret their message can be a balm.

If you’re grieving your own animal soulmate, know this: your connection isn’t broken—it’s simply shifted frequencies. They are still walking beside you. Just listen with your heart.

Closing Reflection

I don’t think I will ever be able to live without a dog. They make everything better. I connect with my animals in Spirit every day. I feel them. I hear their guidance. And I know—one day—I will see them again.
